EARTH OVEN WORKSHOP WEEKENDS are held in a wonderful setting near Presteigne on the Welsh Border during the summer months. The workshops are very much ‘hands on’, our aim being to give you the skill and confidence to go home and start building an oven of your own. You will then have the great satisfaction of cooking wonderful food in an oven you have made yourself.
Over the weekend the workshop participants, of a maximum of eight people, will build an oven from start to finish. Clay soil is dug straight from the field and ‘puddled’ with sand to make the material used. All aspects of oven building are covered, including choosing suitable soil and other materials, siting the oven and ideas for an outdoor bakehouse, plinth construction, firing-up and many cooking methods.
The oven in our Bakehouse will be lit over the weekend to demonstrate different ways of using an Earth Oven and participants will have the chance to cook their own pizzas for lunch on the Sunday. Illustrated sheets, a selection of recipes and a sourdough culture originating from a village bakery in Galicia, will be available to take away.
"Many thanks for an interesting and enjoyable weekend, the whole programme was extremely detailed and informative. The content was just right and the atmosphere and location perfect."
